If you meet a teacher who claims to have a "never before revealed, life altering singing method", be wary. Teaching people to sing is an old profession and so you want a teacher who bases his teaching on facts and not experimental singing methods.

Your voice may be different from your teachers voice. This is not a problem if your teacher has been teaching for at least five years because she should have encountered different vocal problems and worked out methods to deal with them.

If you discuss lessons with a prospective singing teacher and she doesn't have a "system" of teaching, that's okay. Many great teachers combine all the information they've encountered into their own singing method.

The best singing method is one that works best for you. Many singers and teachers claim they have the best singing method. As long as the method introduces you to breathing management and control, tone and resonance, clear articulation that does not cause tension and the general principles of good singing then it's a good singing method.  

With any singing method bare in mind that you could need anywhere from three to six months to really grasp the concepts of voice lessons. Sure, you should hear changes in your voice within the first month, but the technical concepts and tough exercises may take a while to get used to. Enjoy each lesson with the understanding that you are on a journey that you can't make in one day irrelevant of the singing method taught.
